Medicare Basics

Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, is insurance plans sold by private companies designed to fill in the gaps in Original Medicare.

How can a Medigap policy help you?

Medicare Supplement plans help you pay for some of the remaining costs like copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. Some Medigap plans even cover services Original Medicare doesn’t.

Medicare won’t pay any of the costs associated with a Supplement plan so you’ll have to pay the premiums for a Medigap policy. Most Medigap policies will help pay for Part B costs.

Medigap and Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Supplement plans do not work with Medicare Advantage plans. That means Medigap cannot be used to pay your Advantage Plan copays, deductibles, or coinsurance costs.

Medigap and Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

You cannot join Part D drug coverage if your Medigap policy has drug coverage. If you want to join a Medicare Prescription Drug plan you need to have your Medigap provider remove the coverage and adjust your premiums.
